On your electricity bill, look for items such as: charge for consumed inductive reactive energy (kVArh), charge for exceeded reactive power, or a power factor (tgφ) above 0.4. What is the difference between a capacitor bank and a harmonic filter?
A capacitor bank compensates for inductive reactive power and improves the power factor (cos φ). A harmonic filter eliminates higher current harmonics generated by inverters, VFD drives, and UPS systems. Installations with a large number of controlled drives require an active or passive filter, not just a capacitor bank.
How quickly does an investment in reactive power compensation pay for itself?
The payback period depends on the level of penalties on invoices and the installation cost. For a typical plant paying 2,000–5,000 PLN/month in reactive power penalties, the compensation cost (20,000–60,000 PLN) is recouped within 12–24 months. After this period, savings are pure profit.
Does reactive power compensation require shutting down the plant?
